About The Role

Our research over the past 50 years has led to significant shifts within automotive, helping the motor insurance industry understand underwriting risk, control claim costs and inform future strategies. With the pace of technology advancements accelerating, our ability to efficiently and effectively deliver meaningful research is critical. Because of this, we have created the role of Vehicle Technology Specialist to focus on new and emerging technology so that the benefits can be exploited, and impacts mitigated on behalf of our member insurers.

As the subject matter expert (SME) in vehicle technology, you will influence business strategy and research projects through the evaluation and communication of intelligence regarding the vehicle manufacture (VM) landscape, including technology and market trends that could impact motor insurance risk. This will involve regular and close liaison with your industry network, ensuring new trends and developments are fed into Thatcham’s strategic considerations at an early stage.  

To make this role a success you will require substantial experience following motoring developments and will have an existing network of contacts within the automotive industry. Just as crucial as your outstanding vehicle knowledge, will be your excellent people skills and ability to build relationships effectively within the industry to broaden your visibility of developments. This role will require an outgoing personality, someone who is not afraid to open doors and take the lead. Previous positions may of included working with or within the motoring press, where networking is crucial to business success.

In return for your specialist expertise and excellent networking skills, this role provides the opportunity to play a crucial role in guiding the strategy for an industry leading organisation with road safety at its heart. 

As a Vehicle Technology Specialist your main responsibilities will involve:

  • Representing the business in external forums, developing an interface with the media to share information and industry updates
  • Evaluating external stimulus including motoring press, reports, networks and conferences
  • Supporting the development of new datasets and insights into new vehicle technology and presenting this to member insurers to assist them in determining associated insurance risk
  • Supporting the communications team in developing technical content for vehicle manufacturer publications
  • Providing the vehicle industry lens to strategic forums, ensuring decision makers are fully briefed on all vehicle manufacturer (VM), Tier 1 and Tier 2 supplier considerations
  • Assisting internal managers, directors and the chief executive with presentations and messaging for industry conferences, member events and meetings
  • Ensuring research methodology is robust and aligns with mobility ecosystem and technological evolution

As a Vehicle Technology Specialist your skills and experience will include:

  • Extensive knowledge and understanding of technical developments, including their implementation within the automotive industry
  • Experience collating opposing data including articles and reports, into reasoned copy to inform and influence
  • An understanding of how vehicle features and specifications affect insurance risk ratings
  • Experience working with or within technical motoring press, following motoring and mobility developments, strategies and trends (other relevant experience will also be considered)

Salary: Circa £62,000 dependent on skills & experience, plus competitive benefits package which includes a 10% non-contributory pension, sick pay, competitive annual leave increasing with length of service, TechScheme Vouchers, plus more!

Location: Thatcham, Berkshire, with the option to work remotely circa 2 days a week 

Working Hours: 8.30 - 16.30 Monday - Thursday and 8.30 - 15.45 Fridays
