About The Role

Are you an experienced Data Scientist with a talent for analysing data? Perhaps you have an interest in the automotive industry? If your answer is yes, then we could have just the job for you.    

Here at Thatcham Research we are looking for an experienced Data Scientist to join our Data & Analytics Team on a full time, permanent basis. As the Data Scientist, you will be responsible for analysing and reporting on the latest insights and trends in motor insurance claims and repairs, while continuously developing analytical products, models and forecasts to represent the latest research and expertise from within Thatcham Research and appropriate industry bodies

As the Data Scientist your responsibilities will involve:

  • Providing data and analytics output to support hypothesis testing and research projects to time and quality targets
  • Liaising with other research centres to communicate research status and share experiences in order to produce better informed research and shared data
  • Building and developing robust and repeatable complex modelling, forecasting and analysis activities to produce insights and research outputs and findings to stakeholders
  • Redeveloping current models and forecasts to ensure that these remain up to date, taking into consideration new data, as well as external factors that may influence outputs
  • Reviewing and analysing internal and external data sources to develop new offerings that will provide improved underwriting and pricing ability to members, thus increasing value to membership
  • Providing high quality communication of analysis and modelling activities, ensuring that communication styles are adapted according to the audience. This will include communicating to teams, management and customers that range from Data Consumers through to Data Professionals
  • Overseeing the authoring of technical reports to communicate research status and outcomes

As the Data Scientist your skills and experience will include:

  • Previous experience working as a Data Science within a commercial environment
  • Ability to interpret both structured and unstructured data and manipulate data into different formats to produce new information and demonstrate trends
  • Experience utilising machine learning techniques, with the ability to build predictive and descriptive forecasting models to explore the impact of automotive change in the future
  • Modelling and forecasting skills
  • Research and sourcing data and statistics
  • Dashboarding skills, such as Qlik, Power BI, and Tableau
  • Previous experience of statistical tools such as R, Python, SPSS, and SAS
  • Ability to prepare fit for purpose analytical products for a range of purposes using information and data from different sources
  • An understanding of the automotive and insurance industries would be a distinct advantage

You have advanced analytical and problem-solving skills, with a proven track record for successfully tackling complex data questions and projects. Your adaptable communication style enables you to clearly explain complex data to a range of audiences, including those unfamiliar with the mechanics behind data science. Your ability to work under pressure and to tight deadlines enables you to maintain a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail at all times.

Location: Thatcham, Berkshire

Working hours: 8.30 – 16.30 Monday – Thursday, 8.30 – 15:45 Fridays
